I never thought I would say it, but here I go..
I, Jenna Conte, am loving these mid-century modern interiors. Over the years, my style has been more shabby chic/vintage/eclectic. I love soft textures, lots of color, and surrounding myself with items that remind me of my travels, family, and friends. Those characteristics are still apart of me but now I am feeling the urge to “grow up” and clean up my style a bit. I am all about a clean white wall with colorful artwork and accessories, mixed with antique and contemporary pieces, and faux fur throws… do you see it? Think white, metal, and wood – with a dash of pink, all mixed together in perfect harmony!
Mid Century Modern has always been a classic style, but this movement has been making a come back, in a BIG way, for the past couple years. With its growing popularity, the timeless pieces are now being reproduced and easily accessible to the public, unlike before when they were only available at (not so) Design Within Reach. Which means…. I can buy some new pieces! Here are my favorites:
1. The Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair & Rocker – Charles and Ray Eames
They come in a variety of colors and bases! Who doesn’t love a cute rocking chair??
With the white walls, these chairs just add the necessary punch of color to bring the space to life
2. Bertoia Diamond Chair – Henry Bertoia
Notice the fur throw..
These bar stool are next on my list! I love metal mesh look. It substantial without being heavy. Ugh, can-not-wait.
3. Cherner Arm Chair – Norman Cherner
The scale is also great!
4. Wassily Chair – Marcel Breuer
The chair is so clean and simple, it is known as being the first chair to use tubular steel . Again, a faux fur throw would be perfect on this – just saying..
Love the juxtaposition of the contemporary furniture with the classical architectural details. Just my style!
5. Risom Lounge Chair – Jens Risom
What do you think? Has this sparked an interest in the Mid Century movement? If you have any free time, I encourage you to research the history behind these iconic furniture pieces.. it’s quite interesting!
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and snagged some deals on Black Friday! Now that the official weekend has commenced, its time to start gearing up for the work week ahead. I was pretty lucky to have had Thursday and Friday off and really have no excuse not to check some things off my to-do list on a gloomy Saturday afternoon. I will admit, I can be quite the procrastinator, but who wants to be motivated on a holiday! If you are like me and can find inspiration anywhere for anything, here is it! These are a few tricks I play to get myself in gear. Now get $#!? done!
1. For around the house..
Do the things that need to be done as they present themselves. If you need to fold those towels laying to the side, fold them now, put away the clothes when they are out of the dryer, wash the dishes when you put them in the sink, put away your shoes when you take them off.. get the idea? It can be hard to start- trust me, I am still working on it, but it’s worth it when you don’t have to do those things later!
2. For homework..
Put yourself on a social media lock down! I usually put my phone in another room, on silent and then designate breaks to when I can use it. I know we are all glued to our iPhones, but you will notice the difference when you are finished an hour early because you weren’t flipping though an ex’s recently added holiday photos.
Also, try making your work space a place you love to be in. I recently reworked my desk and I look forward to spending time there everyday. How can someone feel motivated in an dull, uninspiring space? Motivational quotes also work!
3. For life’s craziness..
Lists, lists and more lists! Write everything down! All too often we forget what we have to do and where we have to be, which means we will probably waste a good amount of time organizing our tasks. When I write things down I focus more on a specific job and check it off sooner. Lists also allow us to prioritize. Getting all the important things done first will reduce the amount of stress we have in our lives while allowing us to attend to those small tasks we all too often forget. Win- win, no?
-Plus lists mean we have an excuse to buy a plethora of notepads and journals. I just might be a pack rat when it comes to notebooks. I scored a bunch at the dollar section of Target recently! Check out the gold theme pens and pencils, as well..
I hope these help! How do you get yourself motivated?
Happy Thanksgiving!!! Today I am thankful for everyone and everything I have in my life. This year, I have come to realize how lucky I am for all the opportunities and experiences I’ve encountered throughout my life and how fortunate I am to have such an amazing circle of family and friends around me. Today, I decided I am adding one more item to my list – flour. I love to bake and kinda pride myself on being an OK baker. This years dessert of choice for Thanksgiving was Coconut Salted Caramel Cookies..sounds delicious right?? I made the batter and popped them in the oven, waiting anxiously to take them out in ten minutes. I smell a strong scent of butter throughout the apartment and thought that smells amazing, I have to sneak a peek! Ugh, to my devastation my cookies turned into butter lava because I forgot to add the flour! Who knew flour was so important! 😉 Well, I pulled myself off the floor and tried again. Here is my second attempt and they are just as good as they sound! I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving!!
For my first post, I would love to share some of my favorite things and current trends I am absolutely obsessed with so you can learn a little bit more about me.
1. The love of my life, Mischa
Ok, ok so she’s my 4 year old Italian Greyhound and if my soul mate (where ever he might be) could be reincarnated, it would be Mishca. For every life changing moment, Mischa has been there. And believe me, these past four years have been anything but predictable. FYI, if you want to learn more about Mischa’s totally chic harness vest click here! harness vest
I currently live in an apartment..sigh. I would give anything for a backyard just to surround myself with any flower I could get my hands on! In the meantime, this little balcony brings a smile to my face every morning. Sometimes I find it amazing how much these guys have grown. I certainly feel a sense of responsibility to make sure they continue to thrive and it feels nice to be able to take care of something.
3. Pajama Sets
Nothing makes me feel more chic and put together than a classic pajama set. I recently just purchased a cute houndstooth and polka dot set..obsessed! These sets are more than just a cute way to lay around the house, I see it as achieving a new level of maturity and setting myself in the right direction. Throwing out all those old college and concert tees was a sense of moving forward to bigger and better things. Don’t worry about breaking the bank on PJ’s, this cutie set is from Target!
4. Gold Accessories
I am loving this whole gold and white trend influencing all areas of design. The color combo is so refreshing, clean, and timeless. My new gold flatware is absolutely all of the above. It might go in theme with the pajama set, but it makes me feel a little bit more settled and established. It’s a great morning when I get to cuddle up with mischa…while eating breakfast with my gold flatware… in my polka dot pajama set…looking out to my little garden. That really came full circle, huh?
5. My Job
I am currently working on a beach house that started as just a furnish job, but quickly turned into a complete gut job! This is my first real big project, that encompasses construction, fixtures, and finishes – start to finish. The client wanted a subtle Moroccan themed interior. I am talking about faux finish walls, hand painted tiles, a variety of fabric patterns, and long sheer draperies blowing in the wind – it’s going to be gorgeous. I can’t wait to share the finish product!
